Paper type: Essay Callum McGregor is one of the main characters in the novel Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. It is an action packed novel based on a society that has been practicing segregation for decades. The novel is set in a fictional country called Pangaea during the 21st century.
Similarly, in Noughts and Crosses, Callum sacrifices his life for what he believes in. The ultimatum to sacrifice his life for the life of his baby or his baby’s life for his, results in Callum deciding to be executed. Much like in Romeo and Juliet, Sephy and Callum’s situation is out of their hands and out of their control.
A theme evident in noughts and crosses is racism, this is an obvious theme because the entire novel is about black people being superior to white people and that white people are being treated a lot worse then blacks are. Some times that racism was shown was when Callum started school and there was the mob of Crosses trying to him from getting in.The essay below explores a short extract from Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. A critical analysis will demonstrate aspects of historical context, ideology of the author, concepts of childhood, stylistic devices used, narrative voice, devices conveying mood and character, themes and how the scene moves the story forward. These language features help us to understand the story more, to know what the characters are thinking and feeling.
